Lions signing Deon Butler

The Detroit Lions will add another tight end to the roster after losing Jordan Thompson to injury.

James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

According to Dave Birkett, the Detroit Lions will sign former Central Michigan tight end Deon Butler. Butler was invited to the Lions rookie minicamp earlier in the year, but did not sign with the team at the time. In his senior season with CMU, Butler caught 30 passes for 424 yards.

Butler's signing is a pretty clear indication that Jordan Thompson is headed for injured reserve after suffering a knee injury in Thursday's game against the Washington Redskins. Thompson spent most of 2014 on the practice squad and was re-signed to a reserves/futures contract back in January.
