Detroit Lions injury report: Pettigrew out; Tate, Ngata return

Thursday update to the injury report. Pettigrew will probably not play against Minnesota, Ngata and Tate return to practice and apparently Lombardi was not aware of the extent of Stafford's injury.

Wednesday brought a spot of good news for the Lions as Larry Warford and Caraun Reid both returned to practice. But, with Thursday and another 24 hours closer to the trip to Minneapolis to play the Vikings, situations at various positions are becoming better for some and more bleak for others. Haloti Ngata and Golden Tate returned to practice today, while a few other injuries continue to nag various Lions.

Both Ngata and Tate did not participate in Wednesday's open practices, but on Thursday the defensive tackle and wide receiver were both limited participants at practice. It was revealed Wednesday that Golden Tate had suffered a quad injury in Week 1 against the Chargers while Haloti Ngata was dealing with a shoulder injury.

Also returning on Thursday is tackle LaAdrian Waddle. Waddle was not listed for Wednesday's practice.

For the second straight day, Darius Slay, Caraun Reid and Larry Warford all participated in position drills at practice. All three are nursing ankle injuries.

Only two Lions were absent on Thursday: linebacker DeAndre Levy is still out, and the prospect of him missing a second week in the NFL season looks to be more and more likely. Tight end Brandon Pettigrew is also out for another day of practice with a hamstring strain suffered in San Diego. It's possible that the Lions play Tim Wright, who was acquired in the offseason from the Buccaneers, on Sunday.

The one curious note comes in regards to Matthew Stafford, who did perform all practices on Thursday. The coaching staff was reluctant to answer many questions to the extent of damage done to Stafford's right arm, while Dave Birkett over at the Detroit Free Press wrote on Thursday that offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi didn't know the full extent of Stafford's injury during the Chargers game.
