NFL roster cuts: Quick thoughts on the Lions 53-man roster

Here's a look at your Detroit Lions' 2015 53-man roster and some quick thoughts on today's transactions.

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions whittled their roster down to the 53-man roster limit on Saturday. Here is a look at how the roster currently stands:

Players currently on roster: 53

RB Theo Riddick OT LaAdrian Waddle CB Alex Carter
RB Zach Zenner OT Cornelius Lucas DT Haloti Ngata

Remember the Lions may still make changes as they look at players that have been released from other teams. Additionally, the Lions will have to build a practice squad in the next upcoming days.

Here are my quick thoughts on the moves made by the Lions today:

  • I was very pleased to see the Lions decide to go with just two quarterbacks. With Kellen Moore's practice squad eligibility, there was just no reason to keep him on the active roster. Whether Moore will accept a practice squad invitation, though, is a separate matter.
  • I'm having a really, really hard time with Joseph Fauria's release. Not only because he was a fun personality to have on the team, but because we know very little about Tim Wright, other than the Buccaneers didn't want him.
  • We are all on the Zach Zenner train.
  • Good for TJ Jones on making the team. I really hope he can develop into a special teams threat that the Lions so desperately needs.
  • I was pleasantly surprised at how many underdogs who made splashes in the preseason made the final roster. Zenner, Jones, Phillip Hunt, Taylor Boggs. Never say preseason doesn't matter. It mattered to those guys.
  • It's always disappointing when the Lions part ways with a draft pick from the previous year, but cutting Larry Webster was absolutely the right move. Hopefully he finds the practice squad and can improve for next year.

How do you feel about the moves the Lions made today?
