According to Adam Schefter, the Tennessee Titans are hiring their interim coach Mike Mularkey as their head coach for 2016. The Titans were the last head coach opening in the league. Presuming no coaches in the playoffs are fired, that means Teryl Austin was once again passed over for a head coaching position.
Last season, Austin received a ton of attention when turned the Detroit Lions defense into the third best unit in the NFL. However, when the Lions came slow out of the gate in 2015, many doubted his true influence. But Detroit's defense finished the season relatively strong, and the Teryl Austin head coaching rumors were just by the end of the year.
This offseason, Austin was a candidate for the Browns, Dolphins, Eagles, Giants and Titans jobs. With all five job openings now filled, Austin will likely remain the Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator, as long as Bob Quinn doesn't have any different plans for the Lions' coaching staff.
