Week 12 comes to a close with another opportunity for the Detroit Lions to distance themselves from their competition in the NFC North. The Green Bay Packers (4-6) are hanging onto playoff hopes and need a win tonight to avoid falling three games back of the division and two and half behind the Wild Card with just five games to go.
In order to avoid that, they’ll have to take down the Philadelphia Eagles (5-5) on their home turf. The Eagles themselves are desperate to keep pace in an extremely competitive NFC East division that currently has every other team with a winning record. A win for Philly would put them just a half game behind Washington (6-4-1), who currently holds the second Wild Card position.
For Detroit, the best case scenario is an Eagles win. The Packers currently hold two crucial tiebreakers over the Lions: head-to-head and division record (2-1 vs. 2-2). If the Lions can pull ahead of the Packers in the next few weeks, they can make their Week 17 matchup with Green Bay somewhat irrelevant, provided that the Vikings haven’t come storming back.
