One of the most overused and tired phrases in sports is the notion of a “must-win game.” Typically people throw it around way too early, and forget just how quickly things can change throughout the course of the season (see Week 5 Vikings vs. Week 8 Vikings).

That’s why I’m not quite ready to call the Detroit Lions’ Week 9 game against the Minnesota Vikings a must-win game. Still, its importance cannot be undervalued. A win would pull them within a half game of the division lead regardless of what the Green Bay Packers do. It would also move the Lions to 4-2 in conference play, a key factor in tiebreakers down the road. And over half of 5-4 teams (52 percent) end up making the postseason, while just 12 percent of 4-5 teams have made the playoffs in the past. An 0-3 hole in the division may be too big for this team to pull out of.

This isn’t a must-win game for Detroit, but a victory would be a huge push towards the playoffs heading into their bye week.
