As December comes to a close, the Detroit Lions find themselves in an unfamiliar spot. With one game to go, Detroit can win themselves their first division title since 1993 with a win over the Green Bay Packers. But if they lose, they risk missing out on the playoffs despite a 9-4 start to the season. 92 percent of teams that start 9-4 end up making the playoffs, so that collapse would be pretty significant.
Chances are your feelings on Lions head coach Jim Caldwell will swing completely based on the results of Sunday’s game, and that doesn’t exactly seem fair. So before Detroit plays their biggest game in several years, let’s see where the public opinion is on Caldwell. But first, let’s see Caldwell’s approval history:
November 2016: 76% approval
October 2016: 57% approval
September 2016: 22% approval
January 2016: 59% approval
December 2015: 12% approval
November 2015: 8% approval
July 2015: 91% approval
January 2015: 89% approval
December 2014: 85% approval
November 2014: 87% approval
October 2014: 94% approval
September 2014: 96% approval
August 2014: 67% approval
June 2014: 77% approval
Caldwell is coming off of his highest approval ratings in over a year. At the time, the Lions were 7-4 and coming fresh off a season sweep of the Minnesota Vikings. But since then, the Lions have gone just 2-2 and looked poor against two of the best teams in the NFC. With frustrations mounting, Caldwell has gone from a Coach of the Year candidate to a coach that some think is on the hot seat.
