Report: Lions trying to get an answer from Calvin Johnson before Wednesday

Free agency is set to be underway on Wednesday, but the Detroit Lions have yet to receiver an answer from superstar receiver Calvin Johnson, whose intentions to retire from football were made publicly known back in January. However, Johnson has yet to make a definitive statement on the matter, pushing many fans into a bit of panic as they wonder what he will actually do and how it will impact the Lions entering free agency. Although the organization has said before they don't want to put a limit on Johnson, it would appear now they're feeling the heat themselves.

The Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett has the story that the team is now pushing back against the silence, hoping and sweating for an answer to come before the free agency open period on Mar. 9. It's a sudden reversal from the position held by Bob Quinn and Rod Wood and the public face of the organization, that has insisted time and time again, on Detroit sports radio and at the NFL scouting combine, there would be no deadline enforced on Calvin Johnson.

Of course, such notions tend to be challenged when free agency looms now less than 48 hours away and any decision by Johnson could determine the fate of $11 million against the salary cap in 2016.

The silence between the Lions and Johnson seems to be fairly blanket, but the hope is that the Lions will have their answer within the next 24 hours. There's been no talk of restructuring Calvin Johnson's contract either. At this point, the future decisions of the team now lie at the mercy of Calvin Johnson and his timing.
