With the 18th in the Pride Of Detroit Community Mock Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select linebacker Darron Lee. Bubba92188 is the acting general manager for the Colts. Below is the rationale for the pick.
The Colts really struggled on both sides of the ball last year but still finished second in the AFC South at 8-8 with their star quarterback, Andrew Luck, hurt for majority of the season. Acting as their GM, I can see multiple areas that need improvement. After a relatively quiet free agency, there are still holes along the offensive line and multiple positions on defense. I also want to upgrade running back because really how much does Frank Gore have left? My first thought was to protect Luck but the problems are along the interior of the line and you can find good guards or centers later in the draft with none this year really worth the 18th pick. I decided to draft linebacker Darron Lee from Ohio State.
The Colts run primarily a 3-4 defense but line up in a 4-3 often as well. I can see Lee playing all over this defense. Lining up as a MLB while in the 3-4 or sliding out to OLB in the 4-3. More and more teams are starting to love these tweener or hybrid type of linebackers like Lee. Darron has the speed and coverage skills to match up with tight ends while also being able to blitz at a highly productive level having 7.5 sacks as a freshman and 4.5 as a sophomore. His 4.47 40 yard dash at the combine was faster than most of the wide receivers and it shows when he is running all over the field. A couple of things he will need to get better on at the next level is shedding blocks and wrapping up his tackles. He would be a welcomed addition to a defense that needs more youth and talent at every level.
