With Week Two of Detroit Lions OTAs in the books, the team decided to make a small roster move regarding the special teams unit. The team announced Thursday afternoon they had waived punter Kyle Christy and signed kicker Devon Bell.
Christy was brought along at the end of April to simply be a camp body during OTAs. The former Florida Gator put up some impressive numbers in college, but Sam Martin's spot on the roster was never believed to be threatened.
The Lions have decided to use that roster spot on a backup kicker instead. Bell hails from Mississippi State University, where he split punting and kicking duties during his four years as a Bulldog. His kicking accuracy was not very good, finishing just 20-36 (55.6 percent) in his college career. However, as someone who can take both kicking and punting reps during practice, he is likely considered a more efficient use of a roster spot, considering Bell won't compete for either Martin or Matt Prater's job.
