The Detroit Lions started off their cutdown to 53 men late on Friday night. According to ESPN’s Michael Rothstein, the Lions have waived center Gabe Ikard.
When Gabe Ikard joined the Lions back in December, he was simply added for depth, but entering 2016, it appeared Ikard would put the pressure on center Travis Swanson. That is, until the Lions selected Graham Glasgow in the third round of the NFL draft.
At first, it didn’t appear that Ikard’s fate was sealed. He was even taking some first-team reps early in training camp. However, as Glasgow slowly got settled in, Ikard slowly dropped down the depth chart, and by the third preseason game, it was pretty clear he wasn’t going to be on the team much longer.
Ikard’s release is probably a good sign for Glasgow’s health. Glasgow has been injured for the past few weeks, but with the Lions moving on from Ikard, it could be an indication that Glasgow is close to returning.
The Lions roster currently stands at 74 players.
Edit: At least Ikard has a sense of humor about it.
Got fired today and this is basically how my girlfriend is treating me with her demands tonight... pic.twitter.com/ywaMzxx3oO
