Once a fifth-round draft pick out of Appalachian State, Sam Martin could very well be one of the highest paid punters in the National Football League. It is being reported that Martin and the Lions have agreed in principle to a contract extension that would keep him in Detroit through the 2020 season.

According to Adam Caplan, the terms are for $3.4 million dollars per year for the next four years, plus incentives.
Sam Martin has, in three seasons, accumulated over 10,000 punting yards, with 76 kicks coming inside the 20-yard line. In his first season, Martin was on the NFC All-Rookie team and since then he’s been exceptional for the Lions in special teams coverage. There is certain to be a very passionate and heated debate, however, about whether he should be among the top three most paid punters in the league; it might dominate sports talk radio for the rest of the day.
