Thursday open thread: Do you approve of the Lions carrying 3 quarterbacks?

If all things went as planned in early September, Brad Kaaya would have never left the Detroit Lions. Sure, the team decided to waive their sixth-round draft pick in their cut down to a 53-man roster, but the choice was not easy for general manager Bob Quinn.

“When it came down to it, it was probably our hardest decision we made coming out of training camp,” Quinn said after the roster cutdown.

The Lions were reportedly planning on bringing Kaaya back to the roster on the practice squad, but the Carolina Panthers claimed him off waivers before they could.

Now the Panther have waived him, and the Lions have returned the favor, claiming him before any team could try to stash him on their own practice squad. The Lions now have three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, something they clearly tried to avoid at the beginning of the year. So today’s Question of the Day is:

Do you approve of the Lions adding Brad Kaaya as a third quarterback on their 53-man roster?

My answer: No. I’ve always been against carrying three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, and with both backup quarterbacks being completely inexperienced, there’s really no reason to keep both on the roster.

That being said, I can see where the Lions are coming from with this decision. They clearly like Kaaya a lot, and they didn’t want to lose a second chance at him. By putting in a claim for him, they prevent the Panthers from bringing him back to their practice squad, if they were interested in doing so.

But, ultimately, I’m not so sure the Panthers, or any other team, would have made a play for Kaaya. And since the Panthers already have three quarterbacks on their roster, I doubt they’d have interest in bringing him back to their practice squad.

So, in my opinion, the Lions probably could have brought back Kaaya on the practice squad without wasting a roster spot on him. Considering that the Lions had to cut three defensive linemen—one of their thinnest positions—on Wednesday, they could certainly put that roster spot to better use than a third-string quarterback that is nearly guaranteed to never see the field in 2017.
