There has been a lot of talk about the Detroit Lions adding a running back this offseason. They have very publicly been doing their research on Joe Mixon, one analyst put them in the running for LeGarrette Blount and they are even listed as the second most likely team to grab Eddie Lacy according to Vegas odds.
But no one has linked the Lions to Pro Bowler Adrian Peterson until now. According to SiriusXM, the Lions may be in the mix for the former division rival:
Filed to SiriusXM: Adrian Peterson wants to take his time & not in a rush to sign. OAK, SEA, NE, DET, GB, and MIN are all possibilities.— SiriusXM NFL Radio (@SiriusXMNFL) March 8, 2017
This is still in the very early stages of a rumor. This tweet does not mention if the Lions have reached out to Peterson or even if the Lions are interested. Instead, SiriusXM seems to be implying that he could be a good fit in Detroit.
The Lions are certainly in the market for a power back that could complement Ameer Abdullah next season. However, there are major concerns regarding Peterson’s talent at this point in his career. Over the past five years, he has suffered several serious injuries and, at 31 years old, he just doesn’t have the burst and strength he once did.
Here’s what our friend Ted Glover of Daily Norseman had to say about Peterson a few weeks ago:
At this point, there’s no reason to believe the Lions are frontrunners to land Peterson, but this is something we’ll continue to monitor as Peterson continues to weigh his options.
