The Kansas City Chiefs have the 27th pick in the NFL Draft and a big Jamaal Charles sized hole on their roster. General manager JJ2672 fixed that problem by taking Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon with the pick. Below is his explanation for the selection.

“This mock draft is crazy! I can't believe how many defensive players have been taken so far. Only eight offensive players were taken. I was planning on going inside linebacker here, but with the top guys gone, I had to choose offense. Scheme issues, injury flags, and "needs more work" concerns plagued the next crop of athletes. Joe Mixon was the best player available that addressed the needs of the Chiefs.

As I started researching the needs for this team, I saw linebacker, running back, cornerback respectively. As I dug deeper, however, I saw two polarized opposite factions in the fan base for drafting a first-round quarterback. Alex Smith is 33 and not a free agent until 2019. He is a capable quarterback, but he has significant downsides. The Chiefs have talked and/or visited with the top four quarterback prospects this spring, fueling the fire that KC may draft one in the first round.

Linebacker Derrick Johnson is 34 and tore an Achilles this past December, they released Jamaal Charles and cornerback Marcus Peters is awesome, but he needs some help. Focusing on and addressing these positions and issues seem much more frugal in my opinion. If I was the GM, I would ride out Alex Smith and wait at least one more year for a better crop of passers to come if I want a first rounder to groom. But there are some that will staunchly disagree with me.

The Chiefs made the playoffs last year and if they want to do it again this year, then Joe Mixon is your pick. I'm NOT saying that he will lead the team, but he will do a lot more than a first-round quarterback guaranteed to sit the bench for two years, barring injury to Alex Smith.

Everyone agrees that Mixon has all the skills to be a three-down back. Even his catching ability is superior than the other top prospects. So the real question is can he stay out of trouble? I believe he can. The parking attendant situation did scare me off because of how recent it was, but I believe he can learn from his mistakes and stay out of trouble.”
