The NFL made it official on Tuesday: The 2017 schedule will be released on Thursday. Per usual, NFL Network will host a bloated two-hour event starting at 8 p.m. ET unveiling each team’s schedule and highlighting the biggest games of the year.
We already know the Detroit Lions’ home and away opponents and their preseason schedule, but one of the biggest questions that remain are how many primetime games they’ll get. This is especially exciting this year, because primetime games could give Detroit the opportunity to show off their new Color Rush and throwback uniforms.
Last year, the Lions were only originally scheduled one primetime game: a Monday Night Football contest in Week 16 against the Dallas Cowboys. However, Detroit was flexed another primetime game to close the season against the Packers.
Today’s Question of they Day is:
How many primetime games will the Lions get in 2017 (not including Thanksgiving)?
My answer: One. I think Detroit will be scheduled another Monday Night Football game this season, and could certainly land a second one on Sunday night. However, unlike my compatriot Mike Payton, I’m not so convinced the Lions are nationally marketable yet. While Matthew Stafford is on the verge of being a league-wide superstar, the Lions don’t have much star power outside of him. Additionally, the way the Lions finished in 2016 looms large over the franchise. Their struggles against the NFL’s best made them look like they don’t belong in the conversation among the league’s elite.
Given their Thanksgiving Classic game, I think it’s unlikely they are scheduled a true Thursday night game this year. That leaves them with just a Monday night game with the opportunity to earn more primetime games once Sunday Night Football’s flex scheduling kicks in.
Your turn.
