The Detroit Lions roster currently consists of 23 rookies: Nine draft picks and 14 players who went undrafted. While those numbers are bound shrink once the team downsizes their roster from 90 to 53, there are still plenty of opportunities for some first-year players to make an impact immediately.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
Who will be the Lions’ rookie of the year in 2017?
You can answer this question however you’d like, but I am going to treat it as “Most Valuable Rookie.” Therefore, my answer has to be first-round pick Jarrad Davis. I know that’s a boring answer, but there’s a reason he was the first name the Lions called on draft day. He fills the Lions’ biggest need and has an opportunity to immediately turn Detroit’s biggest weakness in 2016 into a strength.
If Davis can meet even half of the hype currently surrounding him, his impact on the team will be easy to spot with the naked eye. Detroit’s defense was atrocious last year, and poor linebacker play was a huge part of that.
Though I like the much-needed playmaking ability of Teez Tabor and I think Kenny Golladay could be a huge red zone threat, nothing gets me more excited for the 2017 season than improved linebacker play. If Davis isn’t the Lions’ rookie of the year, it will be a pretty big disappointment.
