Friday open thread: Should the Lions sign Glover Quin to an extension?

The veteran safety wants to come back, but is it time to move on?

On Thursday, Detroit Lions safety Glover Quin told the media that he reached out to the team about signing an extension. Quin will be entering his fifth and final year of his contract with the Lions this season and is set to make a base salary of just $4 million.

“I would love to be here in Detroit,” Quin told reporters. “And if I sign an extension, I'd probably finish my career here.”

Although Quin has put in an amazing amount of work since joining Detroit—starting all 64 games—he still feels incredibly healthy. “I feel like I'm 25 again. Like, I actually feel better now than I felt last year,” Quin said.

Next year Quin will be 32, while the rest of the Lions defense continues to get younger. In 2016, Quin was the eighth oldest starting safety (minimum 8 games started). Though his play has remained above average, general manager Bob Quinn has shown no hesitation in overturning the roster he inherited.

So today’s Question of the Day is:

Should the Lions sign Glover Quin to an extension?

My answer: Without a doubt, yes. Before the draft, I felt too many were counting out Glover Quin as a possibility to start for this team for another three or four years. Many felt since Quin’s contract was nearing an end, the Lions should have drafted his replacement in 2017.

There were some small signs of Quin’s play declining last year—he played a little slower, he had his fewest interceptions since 2012—but he still remained the Lions’ most reliable defender all season long.

As our own Andrew Kato pointed last year, Quin’s role in this defense is absolutely essential, and his incredible starting streak has made him one of the few players on the entire team Detroit can count on week in and week out. And he is constantly pointed out by players and media as one of the biggest leaders on the team.

The Lions have had the services of Glover Quin for the past four years at an incredible discount. And until I see any signs of serious decline, I believe the Lions should (and will) continue to keep him around in Detroit.

Your turn.
