On Monday, Detroit Lions head coach Rod Wood told WJR radio that a few weeks back he invited Calvin Johnson to training camp in an effort to bury the hatchet between the two parties.
Whether the move was just a moment of true honesty from Wood or a calculated ploy to make Johnson out as the uncompromising party has yet to be seen. Regardless of the motive from Wood, the metaphorical ball is in Calvin’s court. Now that the invitation has gone public, he can choose to decline or accept as he pleases, knowing that each choice will come with its own consequences.
For now, let’s table the discussion as to whether he should accept Detroit’s offering—it’s hard to know what Johnson is dealing with anyways—but instead, let’s predict whether he will accept the invitation. Today’s Question of the Day is:
Do you think Calvin Johnson will accept the Lions offer to attend training camp?
My answer: I really think it’s too soon. Johnson is still clearly bothered by something that happened over the past year since he’s retired, and he’s shown no signs that he’s ready to turn that page. He could certainly put a face on and do it just to save his reputation among Lions fans, but that doesn’t appear to be a priority for him in retirement.
If I had to guess, Johnson will quietly decline the Lions’ offer without making a public statement about it. But Megatron has been full of surprises since his retirement, so anything could happen.
Your turn.
