Sunday open thread: Should the Lions re-sign Anquan Boldin?

Anquan Boldin will be choosing his next team in the next few weeks. Should the Lions throw their hat into the ring?

9 more weeks.

That’s how long until the Detroit Lions host the Arizona Cardinals to kick off the 2017 NFL regular season. Training camp is three weeks away.

That means it’s just about time for free agent wide receiver Anquan Boldin to make a decision. Last year, Boldin signed with the Lions on July 26, so we can expect a decision later this month.

Back in March—after free agency but before the NFL Draft—we asked Lions fans if they thought the Lions should re-sign Boldin. 92 percent of you wanted the Lions to try to bring Boldin back.

But now things are different. The Lions drafted Kenny Golladay in the third round, Jared Abbrederis has looked impressive in OTAs and minicamp, and maybe most importantly, the Lions only currently have $6.0 million in cap space. So given the Lions’ current situation, today’s Question of the Day is:

Do you want the Lions to re-sign Boldin?

My answer: At this point, I think it’s best to move on. While Boldin would undoubtedly make the team better, Detroit has plenty of weapons on offense. It wouldn’t be worth it to spend what would likely be nearly half of their current cap space to bring Boldin back. Even though Detroit could theoretically create more space with extensions for Matthew Stafford and Glover Quin, the Lions would still be playing with fire.

That being said, if Detroit is truly worried about their receiver depth, it may be worth that risk. But with a surplus of receiving options at tight end and running back, the need for another dominant receiver seems like a luxury to me. Of course, it may not even matter, because Boldin reportedly would like to play closer to his home in Florida.

Your turn.
