It was just earlier in the week when general manager Bob Quinn said that he expected Detroit Lions defensive end Ezekiel Ansah to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. Now it seems like that will be a reality as the team announced on Friday afternoon that Ansah had been removed from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.
Despite practicing during all of the offseason workouts, Ansah started training camp on the PUP list with an undisclosed injury. Last year, an ankle injury held him out of three games and appeared to limit him for the rest of the 2016 season.
The Lions absolutely need Ansah to play right away, as injuries to Kerry Hyder and Brandon Copeland, along with a four-game suspension ot Armonty Bryant, have left Detroit extremely shorthanded at defensive end.
In addition to Ansah, the Lions have activated Corey Robinson from the PUP list. Robinson underwent surgery for a foot injury that happened late last season and hasn’t practiced or participated in any offseason drills.
Regardless, Robinson is a good bet to make the roster after the Lions released Cyrus Kouandjio earlier in the week and undrafted rookie Storm Norton struggled in the preseason finale.
