Former Lions LB Antwione Williams signed to Vikings practice squad

The former Lions fifth-round pick has landed with one of the team’s rivals.

One of the most surprising cuts for the Detroit Lions this year was 2016 fifth-round pick Antwione Williams. The young linebacker was expected to be a contender for the Lions’ strongside linebacker job in 2017, but quickly fell behind Paul Worrilow and Steve Longa on the depth chart during the preseason.

It was even more surprising to see the Lions pass over Williams for their practice squad after he went unclaimed through waivers. Detroit opted to keep Thurston Armbrister on the 10-man squad over Williams, clearly signaling that they were permanently moving on.

For the first week of the season, Williams went jobless. On Wednesday, however, Williams was signed to the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad.

The move comes after the Vikings saw their own practice squad linebacker, Elijah Lee, poached by the San Francisco 49ers to their 53-man squad.

It may be a while until we see Williams on the Vikings’ active roster, as Minnesota has six linebackers already on their 53-man roster, including Pro Bowler Anthony Barr and budding star Eric Kendricks.

Either way, we wish Williams the best in Minnesota. See you Week 4.
