In a day, the Detroit Lions 2018 head coaching search will enter its third week. We’ve learned a lot over the past 13 days, while also simultaneously learning nothing.
It’s clear—as it was before the search even began—that Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is their favorite candidate to fill the job, but there are several roadblocks in Detroit’s way from making the hire.
First, there’s the fact that they aren’t even allowed to come to an agreement with Patricia until after the Patriots are knocked out of the playoffs, which won’t happen for at least another week.
Then there’s the New York Giants. Reports have been all over the place in New York, but now some are reporting that Patricia is one of the favorites to land the job in the Big Apple.
Detroit’s presumed backup plan, Texans defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel, is no guarantee either. He’s reportedly one of two finalists for the Indianapolis Colts job, along with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
So given all we know right now, today’s Question of the Day is:
Who do you THINK will be the next Detroit Lions head coach?
My answer: My answer is both who I think is going to win the job and who I want to win the job: Matt Patricia. While the reports out of New York are scary—particularly the one from Peter King that suggests Patricia prefers the New York job—there has just been too much erroneous reporting surrounding the Giants job for me to believe any of it.
I think New York grabs themselves an offensive-minded coach, whether it be Pat Shurmur or Josh McDaniels. That should leave the Lions with the man they’ve wanted all along. It’s going to be frustrating to wait all that time—and we may have to wait all the way until February 5, the day after the Super Bowl—but I’m still about 60 percent confident it will happen.
