Tuesday open thread: Do you want the Lions to interview Steve Wilks?

Should the Lions wait it out and get their last reported candidate interviewed?

The Detroit Lions’ head coaching search could be coming to an end shortly. The Chicago Bears found their guy on Monday, hiring former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. One of the Lions’ seven candidates, Teryl Austin, has officially taken the defensive coordinator job with the Bengals.

With the landscape starting to clear out, it seems like only a matter of time before the Lions make their decision. In fact, according to one report, it could happen in the next 24 hours:

Of course, the insinuation here is that either Matt Patricia or Mike Vrabel will be Detroit’s new head coach. If Vrabel is their guy, the Lions could literally announce the move at any minute. If it’s Patricia, however, Detroit will not be able to formally announce it until the Patriots are out of the playoffs.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, there’s one more candidate on the Lions’ list that hasn’t been interviewed yet: Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Carolina was just knocked out of the playoffs, and Wilks will begin fulfilling his interview requests on Tuesday by meeting with the Giants, then traveling to interview with the Cardinals on Wednesday.

The Lions are expected to interview Wilks, but there is no scheduled date yet. Additionally, it seems like they may have already made up their mind and Wilks has other suitors anyways. So today’s Question of the Day is:

Do you want the Lions to interview Steve Wilks?

My answer: Yes, why not?

One of my biggest concerns going into this coaching search was that Bob Quinn wasn’t going to really do his due diligence with these candidates, considering Matt Patricia was the heavy favorite to land the job from the get-go.

While Patricia still seems like his guy, Quinn has eased most of my fears by interviewing five other candidates for the job. But considering Wilks was on the original list of reported candidates for the Lions head coaching vacancy, I would like to see Quinn see it through and interview the guy. There’s very little harm in doing so, and I don’t think waiting would put the Lions in danger of losing out on a candidate like Patricia or Vrabel.

I don’t feel too strongly one way or the other about Wilks as a candidate, but it just makes sense to give him an interview anyways.

Your turn.
