Matt Patricia has been on the job for eight months now, and we finally have some results to judge him by. The Detroit Lions are 2-3 at the bye, and it’s been a whirlwind of a season thus far. In the Lions’ two wins, they’ve looked dominant at times, taking down two of the best teams over the past decade. In their three losses, they’ve looked absolutely outmatched, and by three teams that current sit with a losing record.
But just a month into the season, it’s hard to tell who anyone is. Are the Patriots actually good this year? More importantly, were they good when the Lions played them? The 49ers’ only win came against the Lions, but they’ve since lost their starting quarterback, so they aren’t any normal 1-4 team.
And then there’s Patricia himself. After shaking off early rumors that his rules and practice regimen was beginning to lose the team, he’s gone 2-1 in his past three games, and the team seems very supportive of him.
His gameday decisions have been a mixed bag, with the team looking a little too conservative at times, but also being aggressive at just the right moments. As for his defense... well, it’s still a work in progress.
Here’s a look at the history of Lions fans’ approval rates of Patricia.
June 2018: 77 percent approval
February 2018: 90 percent approval
