Michigan vs. Michigan State: open thread

While Lions football isn’t back yet, it’s rivalry week for college football fans in the state of Michigan. Who will come out on top Saturday?

Welcome to the weekend, folks. The Lions return from the bye week on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, but you don’t have to wait that long to digest some quality football. It’s rivalry week in the state of Michigan as the Michigan Wolverines travel to East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans in a top-25 matchup.

The narrative surrounding the Wolverines has been head coach Jim Harbaugh’s alleged inability to win big games. Last week’s pummeling of then-15th ranked Wisconsin silenced the critics for now; a signature win in East Lansing this weekend would go a long way to quieting that narrative for a while.

The Wolverines are in the midst of the gauntlet of their schedule—following a bye next week they’ll take on 18th-ranked Penn State at home and travel to the 2nd-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes just two weeks later. Senior defensive lineman Chase Winovich has dubbed this part of the schedule “the revenge tour.”

The Spartans enter this weekend with a 4-2 record and are ranked 24th following their upset over Penn State last weekend. With two losses already, the Spartans are just about out of the playoff picture, but with games against Michigan and Ohio State yet to be played they could easily put themselves in the position for a New Year’s Six bowl. Not to mention, a win this weekend would knock the Wolverines out of playoff contention as well.

Whose side are you on for this rivalry matchup? Can the Spartans knock the Wolverines out of the playoff picture? Will Harbaugh and the Wolverines pull off another statement win? Let us know in the comments.
