Detroit Lions approval poll: Matt Patricia (November 2018)

Do you approve of the job Matt Patricia is doing as the Detroit Lions head coach

NFL: Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions 2018 season is in danger of going off the rails, if it hasn’t already. They’re already well behind the division race after sitting at 3-3 just three weeks ago. After a couple of impressive early wins, the Lions have looked completely incompetent the last three weeks against some of the best teams the conference has to offer.

Just about everyone in the Lions organization is starting to feel the heat: Matthew Stafford, Bob Quinn, and, of course, head coach Matt Patricia.

When we last checked in with our approval poll of Patricia, the Lions were sitting at 2-3 on their bye week, having just come off a big win over the Packers. Since then, the Lions had their best game of the season in Miami, but that seems to have been long forgotten due to the following three games.

Here’s a look at Patricia’s approval numbers since joining the team in February.

October 2018: 73 percent approval
June 2018: 77 percent approval
February 2018: 90 percent approval

Considering fan confidence is currently at just six percent, it’s easy to see where this month’s approval poll is headed. Patricia will be given time to turn the team around, but his poor start as a first-time head coach has some fans already calling for his head.

That being said, there are a few things he can hang his hat on. There are no tangible signs that Patricia has “lost the team” and the Lions have continued to play hard throughout the second half, despite facing three-score deficits. He’s also managed to get decent production out of other team’s castoffs, like Romeo Okwara and, to a lesser extent, Eli Harold.

Still, it’s hard not to see the bad outweighing the good. The Lions have come out in the past three weeks and looked completely outmatched at the beginning of games, with the team making adjustments way too late to make a difference. Patricia isn’t going anywhere any time soon, but he’s certainly not making a lot of fans this early in his career.
