How is Bob Quinn doing as the Lions’ GM?

Earlier in the week, we asked Detroit Lions fans whether they approved of the job Matt Patricia is doing as the team’s head coach. At the time, fans gave him just a 38 percent approval rate. Of course, since then, things have only gotten a little more interesting.

But let’s put Patricia aside for a minute, because today we’re putting general manager Bob Quinn on trial.

When we last checked in on Quinn, people were starting to believe in the process. The 2018 draft class was killing it, Romeo Okwara looked like a savvy signing, and the Lions had just won two of their last three game. A lot has happened since then, but before we get into it, here’s a look at Quinn’s approval rating throughout his career in Detroit.

October 2018: 70 percent approval
September 2018: 26 percent approval
May 2018: 89 percent approval
March 2018: 83 percent approval
February 2018: 92 percent approval
November 2017: 78 percent approval
October 2017: 82 percent approval
August 2017: 95 percent approval
June 2017: 93 percent approval
April 2017: 97 percent approval
February 2017: 93 percent approval
December 2016: 96 percent approval
August 2016: 70 percent approval
June 2016: 86 percent approval
April 2016: 74 percent approval
February 2016: 72 percent approval

Okay, let’s take a deep breath now.

Since we last checked in, Quinn made a trade for Damon Harrison Sr. that 95 percent of fans gave an “A.” That trade has turned out to be just as good as expected, as “Snacks” has quickly become the Lions’ best defensive player in an instant.

A week later, however, Quinn traded away Golden Tate, which nearly split the Lions fanbase right down the middle. A third-round pick is undeniably good value for giving away a player for just nine games. But it left the Lions’ offense crippled and many believe it sent a message that still resonates that the 2018 season is over.

And while the book has yet to be written on Patricia’s head coaching career, Bob Quinn will ultimately be responsible for whether things do or do not work out with him in Detroit.
