Tuesday open thread: Which NFC North team is having the most disappointing season?

It’s been a rough year for most of the NFC North.

It’s been a rough year for most of the NFC North. Heading into 2018, many believed this was the best division in football. The Minnesota Vikings made a bold move in getting Kirk Cousins—perhaps the last piece of the puzzle in their Super Bowl team. The Green Bay Packers were getting a healthy Aaron Rodgers, which is typically enough for that team to compete for the playoffs. The Lions were coming off back-to-back 9-7 seasons, and with a new defensive-minded coach, there’s a chance they could’ve taken the next step in his first year. Ironically enough, most agreed that the Bears were likely the most improved, but still a year or two away from competing.

Nothing has worked out as planned. Through 13 games, only the Bears are above .500, and everyone else has massively underperformed. The Packers have already fired their head coach. The Lions seemed destined to at least fire their offensive coordinator. And after their “Monday Night Football” loss to the Seahawks, the Vikings are 6-6-1, and many are questioning the move to add Cousins.

So today’s Question of the Day is:

My answer: I think it has to be the Vikings.

Even though Minnesota still currently holds the final playoff spot, the team is massively underperforming in respect to preseason expectations. While the defense still remains as fearsome as ever, their offense has taken a huge step back. After averaging 23.9 points last season (10th), the Vikings are scoring just 21.7 points per game in 2018, good for 20th in the NFL. Is it because they lost offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur? Is it Kirk? Did their offensive line luck finally catch up to them? It’s likely a combination of all three.

And while Minnesota is still in a very good spot to make the postseason, especially with everyone else in the conference failing on Sunday, their Super Bowl aspirations seem extremely far off. With their window closing quite rapidly, that has to be a huge letdown for Minnesota.

Your turn.
