Obviously, the Detroit Lions don’t stand to benefit directly from any more wins on the season. It may help boost some confidence, and it’s not like the players are going to try any less hard, knowing their reputations are on the line every single time they step out on the field, but in terms of direct standings, a win only hurts their chances at a better draft pick.
But there are two sides to every game. A Lions win is not only a Lions win this week, it’s also a Minnesota Vikings loss, and the Vikings (7-6-1) are in a position right now where they can’t really afford a loss. With the Eagles (7-7) and Washington (7-7) right on their heels, and a date with the Chicago Bears next week—a team that could theoretically be playing for a first-round bye—Minnesota desperately needs a win this week over the Lions to stay in a playoff spot.
Lions players like Darius Slay and Glover Quin shrugged off the motivation of playing spoiler when they spoke to the media on Wednesday, saying they’re more focused internally, but as a fan, do you feel the same way? Today’s Question of the Day is:
Do you want the Lions to play spoiler to the Vikings this week?
My answer: With no other real benefit coming from a win, there is a small amount of pleasure I’d get in potentially knocking the Vikings out of the playoffs. While they’re probably the Lions’ smallest rival in the division, they’re a constant source of frustration every single year. That defense has had the Lions’ number for years, and it has resulted in a beat-up Matthew Stafford nearly every single time they play.
So while it’s not a lot of motivation for me as a fan, there would be a little bit of extra pride if Detroit could pull off an upset and send Vikings fans into a panic (again). And at this point in the season, you have to enjoy the little things in life.
Do you want the Lions to play spoiler vs. the Vikings?
