Even the most optimistic Detroit Lions fans know that playoffs are longer than a longshot at this point in the season. There may be realistic ways in which they can make it in at 8-8, but literally everything would have to go the Lions’ way in the next four weeks. There’s a reason why Football Outsiders puts their overall chances at the postseason at 0.3 percent, and the New York Times just plainly says “<1%”.
Over the past week, I’ve seen a variety a fans say they’re checking out on the team for the rest of the year. Anywhere from die hards to sports talk radio call-ins have pretty much given up on the team or are just not interested in watching this team play in the final quartile of the season.
And it’s completely understandable. Though the team is still competing, they aren’t particularly fun to watch right now, and the stakes have been removed completely.
Of course, if you don’t watch Lions football now, it means you’re going to have to wait nine months before you can do so again. So today’s Question of the Day is:
Will you be watching Lions vs. Cardinals Sunday?
My answer: Of course I am. Though I will say, if I didn’t have my professional obligation to watch and write, I’d still probably watch, but not with a close eye. This season has been long and arduous, and for the first time in a while, I’m ready for a break. It’s been a rough season, and while I know I’ll miss football during the offseason, I won’t miss this kind of football.
Still, I’ve conditioned myself to literally be anxious when the Lions are on and I’m not able to watch, so no matter the record or the score, I’ll be watching.
Your turn.
