Assuming nothing Josh McDaniels-esque happens in the next hours, Matt Patricia will officially be introduced as the Detroit Lions next head coach. The Lions are expected to have an introductory press conference for Patricia at 3 p.m. ET and will be streaming it live through their official website.
Introductory press conferences are largely ceremonial and symbolic. It’s an opportunity for the team to create a little hype while showing off their brand-new tool. But it’s also an important first impression for the head coach to his fanbase. And for a guy like Matt Patricia—who has never been in the spotlight as a head coach—it’s an opportunity to instill confidence and prove himself different from the other failed Patriots coordinators before him.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
What do you want to hear from Matt Patricia during his introductory press conference?
My answer: There’s very little Patricia can realistically say that will make me feel different about the hire. Words are just words.
That being said, here’s both what I expect and want to hear from Patricia on Wednesday afternoon:
- He expects to win and win now
- He has already mapped out a plan with Bob Quinn and is already underway in implementing it
- He essentially already has a coaching staff ready to be hired
- He plans on overseeing defense (calling plays, preferably)
Other than that, I’m expecting a handful of coachspeak. “I’m excited for the opportunity.” “I think we’re very close already.” “I am going to give it my all.” “Bob Quinn/Martha Ford/Rod Wood have been very involved and enthusiastic throughout the process.” Etc.
Your turn.
