When news broke earlier that the Detroit Lions had expressed interest in free agent cornerback Richard Sherman, many (myself included) brushed it off as Detroit making a basic inquiry about his availability and cost. However, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the interest is much more serious than that. The Lions actually plan to meet with the All-Pro corner next week:
Obviously, there is still the big hurdle with the 49ers. By all accounts, they’re making a big push for Sherman, and it seems like they’d prefer him not to leave San Francisco without a contract.
However, the fact that Sherman scheduled a meeting with the Lions certainly seems to indicate the Lions are still very much in play.
This would be a very aggressive move for the Lions, seeing as Sherman will command a pretty heft salary and cornerback isn’t one of the biggest needs for Detroit. Still, it’s hard not to be at least a little excited about having Darius Slay and Richard Sherman in the same defensive backfield, even if Sherman will be turning 30 this year and is coming off a serious Achilles injury.
UPDATE: ESPN’s Josina Anderson says Sherman told her there is no specific date for a meeting with Detroit yet:
No date for a #Lions visit has been scheduled, at this time, per Sherman.— Josina Anderson (@JosinaAnderson) March 10, 2018
