One of the best defensive linemen in the NFL is expected to hit the market shortly. According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, the Miami Dolphins will be cutting Ndamukong Suh as soon as Monday.

UPDATE: Pro Football Talk is reporting that Miami will wait until Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, when the new league year starts.

The move comes as little surprise because Miami finds themselves in a very tight cap situation, and the team has been rumored to be considering this move since the middle of the 2017 season. If given a June 1 designation, this release will end up saving Miami $18 million in cap space. If they just cut him and reap the benefits now, they’ll only get $3.9 million in savings.

So where will Suh land, and do the Detroit Lions have any interest in a reunion with the monster defensive tackle? We obviously don’t know the answer to the latter, but Suh may have given everyone a clue to the former on Monday morning:

From Seattle, Suh states, “Stay tuned, could be some exciting news going on.” The Seahawks did just released a handful of players in a cap-saving moves, and are sitting there with about $30 million in cap space. They also just lost a ton of defensive talent, including Michael Bennett and Richard Sherman.

As we’ve stated before, a Suh reunion in Detroit could make sense for both sides. The Lions have a big need for defensive linemen. Detroit struggled to defend the run last year after Haloti Ngata was placed on IR. Though Ngata could return in 2018—he’s expressed a desire to do so—Detroit needs fresher face there. Suh is 31, but he’s still playing at a high level (ranked fifth at his position according to PFF). He still occasionally conducts business in Michigan, so there may not be as much bad blood between Detroit and Suh as some suggest.

Stay tuned as we’ll give updates on Suh and all other notable free agents with our Lions free agency rumor tracker.
