Free agency is far from over. In fact, it’s really barely underway. While most of the big-name signings have already happened and the main headlines have been written, the second and third waves of free agency could be just as important to some teams still looking to upgrade their roster.
The Detroit Lions weren’t all that active in the first wave, but that doesn’t change the fact that their roster is quite different than it was a week ago. The Lions added a pair of linebackers. They have a new tailback. They lost a key player on the defensive line, and cut their best tight end.
In other words, the Lions’ needs have shifted quite a bit. So because needs have shifted, it’s worth considering a look forward to the NFL Draft, even though a lot will happen between now and then.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
If the draft were today, who would you want the Lions to realistically pick?
My answer: Vita Vea would be the ultimate dream right now. I think the Lions’ biggest need right now is an interior defensive lineman, and Vea would fit in perfectly. Unfortunately, many believe Vea will be long gone before the Lions are picking at 20. That would leave options like Maurice Hurst (if his heart condition medically clears), Da’Ron Payne or Taven Bryan as realistic options in the first round.
I don’t have a big personal preference between those three backup plans, as they would all make a lot of sense for Detroit given their current roster.
Your turn.
