We’ve reached Week 2 of NFL free agency, and it’s time to take a look back and evaluatin the Detroit Lions’ haul from the first few days.
While the Lions didn’t go out there and spend wildly on a few big names, as they did in the two previous years with Rick Wagner and Marvin Jones Jr., they did add five mid-tier guys who are expected to range from being starting-level talent to roster depth. Here’s a look at Detroit’s five additions thus far:
- LB Devon Kennard
- LB Christian Jones
- DB DeShawn Shead
- G/T Kenny Wiggins
- RB LeGarrette Blount
Today’s Question of the Day is:
Which of the Lions’ five additions in free agency excites you the most?
My answer: I’m very excited to see what Devon Kennard can do. Though his career statline comes off as a little underwhelming, I can’t wait to see what Lions head coach Matt Patricia has in store for him. Remember, Patricia’s career really took off when he started coaching the linebackers in New England for five years. He knows his linebackers, and we’ve already seen him take in mid-to-low tier players and get something useful out of them (Kyle Van Noy, Marquis Flowers).
It really says something to me that the Lions’ first two free agency signings under Patricia were linebackers. He knows what he wants, and we went out and got it. As a result, I think Kennard has a chance at being one of the most important pieces to the Lions’ new defense. He can play on the edge with his hand in the dirt. He can help hold the edge as a run defending linebacker. And he’s got some skills as a blitzer, as well.
Now, Kennard is really a “Jack of all trades, master of none” type of player, so I’m not saying he’s going to do everything and do it well. But with such a versatile talent set, I’m not sure there’s a better place for him to land than with Matt Patricia.
Your turn.
