Cowboys 2018 mock draft: Dallas selects Harold Landry

The Cowboys add another pass rusher with the pick before the Lions.

The Dallas Cowboys are on the clock, and they have yet another opportunity to screw the Detroit Lions. With the 19th overall pick, and the Lions on the clock next, Dallas holds Detroit’s destiny in their hands.

The person who stands in the way of the Lions is acting Cowboys general manager Bubba92188. Will the Cowboys take someone off the board that would’ve been great in Detroit, or will they harmlessly take a player the Lions weren’t even looking at?

With the 19th pick in the Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft, the Cowboys have selected edge rusher Harold Landry out of Boston College. Here’s Bubba92188 with the explanation:

With the 19th pick my choice came down to three players. Leighton Vander Esch, Will Hernandez, and Harold Landry. This was a really hard decision.

I decided to go with one of the best pass rushers in the draft, Harold Landry.

While I’m not the biggest Landry fan I had to put my personal feelings aside and do what I thought was best for the Dallas Cowboys. This offseason they added both Marcus Martin and Cameron Fleming so I decided to hold off on Hernandez. Dallas can let these two battle it out and Collins can either stay at right tackle while Martin handles left guard or Collins can slide back over to left guard and Fleming can take over at right tackle.

Leighton Vander Esch was very intriguing but, again, I don’t see this as the top need. Dallas still has Sean Lee, who is one of the best linebackers in the NFL, and Smith, who played solid in his first year back from a major injury. With defenses playing more and more nickel formations I decided to hold off.

That led me to Harold Landry. Even with DeMarcus Lawrence’s 14.5 sacks, Dallas finished middle of the pack with 38 team sacks last season. To put that into perspective, Detroit finished with 35 team sacks. He also has had two back surgeries that limited him in multiple seasons. Dallas has their concerns over his longevity. I also had this thought, Zach Martin and Lawrence will both be free agents after this coming season. Who would you rather pay? I’m paying arguably the best guard in football while grooming Landry to take over for Lawrence.

Landry is almost identical to Lawrence in size. Both had similar weaknesses coming out of college. Lawrence was drafted with the second pick in the second round. I believe in Marinelli’s defense Landry can continue to play with his hand in the dirt and eventually take over for Lawrence after this year.
