I would never go as far as calling our own commenters traitors simply for their role in our Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft. So let’s just say the_hook is on notice after volunteering to be the Minnesota Vikings’ general manager in back-to-back years.

The Vikings are hoping to build on a breakout 2017 season, and they’ve already made a few bold moves this offseason, acquiring Kirk Cousins and Sheldon Richardson. But they may need more than that to get beyond the NFC Championship Game this season. So with the 30th pick in the 2018 POD Community Mock, the Vikings have selected Louisville cornerback Jaire Alexander. Here’s the_hook with the rationale for the pick:

Much like Bob Quinn with the Lions, Rick Spielman has set out to completely rebuild the Vikings’ OL over their disastrous 2016 level. He started it in 2017 free agency by signing tackles Riley Reiff and Mike Remmers, replacing Matt Kalil and Andre Smith. As POD’s Viking GM last year, I selected Pat Elflein, and Rick Spielman did as well—in Round 3—plus guard Danny Isidora in the fifth round. This free agency period, Spielman added to those by acquiring RG Tom Compton from the Bears. Again, much like the Lions, there is an obvious need at the LG position, where one should be found at pick #30….

And Will Hernandez drops right into Spielman’s lap. The problem is, so does Jaire Alexander, my No. 2 CB on the board, and a top 20 overall prospect. The Vikings also have a need at CB, (as well as punt returner), and Alexander would fit the Vikings’ needs perfectly. A twitchy, physical, ball-hawking, playmaking, lock-down corner, his addition to the Vikings’ DB group would be terrifying to opposing offensive coordinators. And with the depth at IOL in this draft, the Vikings are just going to have to wait another round to begin addressing that need.
