The Denver Broncos are on the clock and aptly DenverLion is ready to step to the podium as the acting general manager. Here’s how the board has played out thus far:

  1. Cleveland Browns - QB Sam Darnold
  2. New York Giants - DE Bradley Chubb
  3. New York Jets - QB Baker Mayfield
  4. Cleveland Browns - RB Saquon Barkley

With the fifth pick in the POD Community Mock Draft, the Broncos have selected Josh Rosen, quarterback from UCLA. Here is DenverLion with the thinking behind the pick.

The last time I repped for the Broncos, I got the position correct (QB), but not the name (they took Paxton Lynch, I said Connor Cook (whoops)). Well, this year looks very similar as far as QB depth is concerned, as the Paxton Lynch experiment is all but over and Brock Osweiler is in Miami.

After losing out on the Kirk Cousins derby (who, ironically, they passed over when they drafted Osweiler), John Elway settled on Case Keenum in free agency. Keenum signed a three-year deal, but it’s clear that they need a young QB to groom behind him. That said, they also need to protect their QBs better and Quinton Nelson was looking very appealing.

I was torn, so I decided to write a fanpost over at Mile High Report to see what Broncos fans felt Elway would do. Some of them commented before I knew who was available and it was nearly unanimous with Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen at the top of everyone’s lists. This thinking was confirmed when I posted the poll of who was available and Rosen received 25 of 50 votes, Nelson came in second with 16 votes.

So, my pick is Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA. It’s a common narrative that Rosen is the most NFL-ready QB in this year’s draft and maybe he will show it come training camp. But my expectation is that he will get a redshirt year behind Keenum in 2018, and may the best QB win come 2019. Not only does this give Rosen time to work on a couple of his perceived weaknesses (coachability, leadership), it gives Elway time to shore up the OL with two drafts and another free agency period.
