We’re still a few months away from entering Camp Battle Season, but seeing as the Detroit Lions entered the third phase of offseason workouts this week with the beginning of OTAs, soon we will see the team’s depth chart developing.
With the Lions roster—especially on defense—going through a major overhaul this offseason (along with the coaching staff) there are a lot of positions that are up for grabs in 2018 and a lot of potential candidates to fill them. Last year, there was limited competition at positions like backup quarterback, running back, linebacker and tight end. Now there is roster full of candidates at those positions.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
What is the most interesting position battle on the Lions team right now?
My answer: Much like last season, I think the most heated, interesting camp battle will occur in the secondary. Last year, we didn’t know who among Teez Tabor, Nevin Lawson, DJ Hayden and Quandre Diggs would take up the No. 2 and 3 cornerback spots on the team. In fact, that position battle was never really settled throughout the season. They all played a role at some point in the offseason.
This year, we’ll see a lot of the same. Who will be the Lions’ nickleback this year? Will Quandre Diggs move back from safety? Will DeShawn Shead take over? What role, if any, will Tabor assume in his second year? Where the heck does third-round pick Tracy Walker fit into the equation? And has anyone seen from Miles Killebrew in the past year?
The secondary if full of questions and a lot of potential answers. I can’t wait to see what Matt Patricia has in store for us.
Your turn.
