Believe it or not, Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia has already been on the job for four months. For most jobs, that’s plenty of time to perform, at the very minimum, an initial performance review. We’re talking one-third of a year already!
Of course, it’s a little more complicated for a football coach. Patricia may have been on the job for four months, but we’ve been unable to see any sort of results based on the hiring. We don’t know if he has adjusted well to his position as a first-time head coach. We don’t know how the players are responding to his coaching style. And biggest of all, we have no idea if he has improved team performance.
But today we’re going to kick off Matt Patricia’s first approval poll as Lions head coach for a few reasons. First, now that Patricia has had around a dozen press conferences and public appearances, we certainly know him better than we did back in February. Additionally, it’s going to be important for us to establish a baseline approval rating, so that when the results kick in during the regular season, we have a frame of reference.
It hasn’t been exactly a clean start for Patricia as head coach. When The Detroit News uncovered the story about his sexual assault allegations from 20+ years ago, it hit the national news cycle and provided a few weeks of embarrassment for the franchise that won’t soon be forgotten.
But since then, Patricia has shaken off the news and remained focused on building the team in his vision. We’ve already seen some drastic changes in the way practices have been run. Patricia is more fiery on the field, more willing to punish players with sprints if he sees poor effort, and he has also brought a handful of new practice drills to Allen Park.
