Tuesday open thread: What is the Lions’ most under-the-radar training camp battle?

What position battle is currently being overlooked?

NFL: Detroit Lions-Minicamp Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

As training camp nears, we know of all the major training camp battles ahead. Nevin Lawson and Teez Tabor headline with the competition for the cornerback job opposite All Pro Darius Slay. The Lions’ running back group is suddenly crowded and that means there isn’t enough room for Ameer Abdullah, Zach Zenner and Dwayne Washington. At least one must go. And Detroit even has a backup quarterback battle ahead, which is bound to draw way too much attention.

But there are a ton of jobs open for the taking this preseason. The Lions’ roster has already undergone plenty of overhaul under Matt Patricia, and as a result, there’s going to be competitions all over the roster heading into the regular season.

So today’s Question of the Day is:

What is the most under the radar position battle heading into training camp?

My answer: Edge rushing depth. We know that Ezekiel Ansah and Devon Kennard are roster locks for the 2018 season, but not much is set beyond that. Will Kerry Hyder rebound after last year’s Achilles injury? Will Anthony Zettel continue his development and find a rotational role again this year? How will last year’s undrafted free agents Jeremiah Valoaga and Alex Barrett fit into the equation? Can Cornelius Washington save his career after a hugely disappointing 2017 season?

There is no clear leader amongst the group to contend for playing time this year, and that is both concerning and fascinating. I will be keeping a very close eye on this set of defenders when training camp opens later this week.

Your turn.
