Tuesday open thread: Which Jets quarterback do you want the Detroit Lions to face Week 1?

Rookie QB or backup veteran?

NFL: New York Jets-Training Camp Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

On Monday, New York Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold finally ended his holdout, agreeing on a four-year deal worth $30.25 million according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It was a bit odd to see Darnold holdout in the new age of structured rookie deals, especially when Darnold is expected to be the team’s franchise player of the future, but he ended up missing just a couple of practices, so there probably isn’t a lot he ended up missing out on.

However, the Jets have just over a month to decide whether they think Darnold will be the quarterback to start the 2018 season, or if they’ll groom him a little longer before throwing him into mix.

Why are we talking about the Jets so much? Well, the Jets are the Detroit Lions’ Week 1 opponent, and New York’s quarterback decision will obviously have a pretty big impact on how Detroit kicks off the year.

So will it be Darnold, Teddy Bridgewater, or Josh McCown lining up under center? Which will the Jets choose? Or, better, yet:

Which quarterback are you hoping the Jets choose for Week 1?

My answer: While I think Darnold could certainly be a great quarterback in New York, it’s not going to happen in his first week of the season. Considering the Lions’ defense is almost certainly going to experience some growing pains, I want the Lions facing a quarterback who will be going through those same pains.

So give me Sam Darnold for Week 1, and I think it will be a great way for Matt Patricia to break in this defense and give them a little confidence going forward. Of course, if Darnold lights up the Lions’ defense (a la Matt Ryan in 2008), it could crush morale. But I just don’t see that happening, especially when you consider the rest of the Jets skill players.
