2018 Lions vs. Giants snap count observations: What happened to DeShawn Shead?

New, comments

Two weeks ago, he was the Lions’ No. 2 CB. Friday night, he didn’t play a single snap.

Graham Glasgow: 29 (38%)
Note: T.J. Lang is credited with a single snap, but I’m pretty sure that didn’t happen.

Observations:

  • Obviously, the starters got a lot more time out there on the field this week, from Matthew Stafford down to the offensive line.
  • On the offensive line, Wesley Johnson and Tyrell Crosby continue to get the most playing time at their respective position. For Johnson, he’s trying to establish himself as the first player off the bench for an interior position. Crosby simply needs to get some NFL experience under his belt, and he, too, could be the first reserve off the bench at his position.
  • Good to see Dan Skipper out there playing after reportedly getting carted off during Wednesday’s practice.
  • After getting a good, long look at Kerryon Johnson in the opener, the Lions split snaps evenly among their top five running backs. Still no sign of Dwayne Washington.

Defense:

Da’Shawn Hand: 25 (42%) — 1 (4%)

A’Shawn Robinson: 19 (32%) — 3 (12%)
Ricky Jean Francois: 17 (29%)
Sylvester Williams: 17 (29%)
Toby Johnson: 12 (20%) — 2 (8%)
Jeremiah Ledbetter: 4 (7%) — 1 (4%)
Christian Ringo: 1 (2%)
Josh Fatu: DNP
JoJo Wicker: DNP

Linebackers

Jarrad Davis: 22 (37%) — 1 (4%)
Devon Kennard: 22 (37%) — 1 (4%)
Miles Killebrew: 21 (36%) — 9 (35%)
Trevor Bates: 20 (34%) — 10 (38%)
Freddie Bishop: 20 (34%) — 8 (31%)
Christian Jones: 19 (32%) — 2 (8%)
Jalen Reeves-Maybin: 17 (29%) — 10 (38%)
Steve Longa: 10 (17%) — 9 (35%)
Darnell Sankey: 5 (8%) — 8 (32%)

Cornerbacks

Nevin Lawson: 37 (63%) — 3 (12%)
Darius Slay: 26 (44%) — 1 (4%)
Teez Tabor: 25 (42%) — 9 (35%)
Chris Jones: 20 (34%) — 3 (12%)
Quandre Diggs: 20 (34%) — 2 (8%)
Antwuan Davis: 19 (32%) — 6 (23%)
Jamal Agnew: 15 (25%) — 5 (19%)
Mike Ford: 9 (15%) — 10 (38%)

DeShawn Shead: DNP

Safety

Tracy Walker: 29 (49%) — 11 (42%)
Rolan Milligan: 29 (49%) — 9 (35%)
Glover Quin: 26 (44%) — 1 (4%)
Tavon Wilson: 23 (39%) — 1 (4%)
Charles Washington: 10 (17%) — 2 (8%)

Observations:

  • Last week, Nevin Lawson was out, so the Lions made sure he got a big chunk of playing time Friday night. However, this week it was DeShawn Shead that was out, and it’s unclear why. Shead did not have any known injuries heading into the game, but he has been slipping down the depth chart ever since starting camp as the team’s No. 2 corner.
  • Nice to see Tracy Walker get a bunch of snaps against the Giants. The third-round rookie played for nearly half the defensive snaps.
  • A’Shawn Robinson was notably still on the field during the fourth quarter of the Lions’ home preseason opener. He also happened to lead all defensive tackles in snaps.
  • On the other hand, rookie Da’Shawn Hand started the game and played even more than Robinson.
  • Miles Killebrew got a huge bump in playing this this week at linebacker. I expect that trend to continue throughout the entire preseason.

Special teams

Don Muhlbach: 8 (31%)
Sam Martin: 8 (31%)
Ryan Santoso: 6 (23%)
Matt Prater: 2 (8%)

Observations:

  • Matt Prater was only on field goal duties—no extra points. He was successful 50 percent of the time.
