Lions TE Luke Willson suffers knee injury vs. Buccaneers, will not return

The Lions’ No. 1 TE suffered a knee injury Friday night. Severity is unknown.

It’s unclear when it happened, but Detroit Lions tight end Luke Willson suffered a knee injury on Friday night and is questionable to return against the Buccaneers.

Willson was presumed to be the Lions’ starter at tight end when signed this free agency, but he has had a fairly unassuming preseason. He has only caught one pass for three yards thus far, and he did not have a single target in Friday night’s game.

The severity of Willson’s injury is unknown, but the fact that he’s listed as questionable rather than out could be promising. For precautionary reasons, however, it’s unlikely that he’ll come back in the game.

In Willson’s place, Hakeem Valles has been shining yet again. Through just over two quarters, Valles has three catches for 38 yards, all of which came working with the first-team offense.

It’s looking more and more like Valles has a place on this 53-man roster.

We’ll update this post as news comes in on Willson’s status.

UPDATE: Willson has been downgraded to OUT:
