For the majority of teams, Thursday marks the opening day of the 2018 preseason. Twelve different games will take place on Thursday night, while four others—including the Detroit Lions vs. the Oakland Raiders—will finish off Week 1 of the preseason over the following two days.
It’s an exciting couple of days for every fanbase around the league, but that excitement has its limits during the preseason. For many, that excitement wears off around the seven-minute mark in the second quarter, when the starters are long gone from the game and the quality of play has clearly lowered on the field. While many of the die-hards will stick around to the final snap, others are understandably only interested in play of guys that are likely to make the 53-man roster.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
How much of the Detroit Lions’ preseason opener will you watch on Friday night?
My answer: Well, it’s my job to watch the entire game, but I’d like to think I would watch the entire thing anyways.
Over my few years covering the team, the one thing I’ve gotten better about as a fan is the personal side of the game. While it may not seem important to watch the Darnell Sankeys and Josh Fatus of the world, those moments mean absolutely everything to those players. It’s actually pretty fascinating watching these players fight for their professional lives, and it’s hard not to root for the guys you’ve been watching fight their ass off every day in practice over the past couple weeks.
And while I’ll mostly have my analyst hat on for those final two quarters of the game, I’m going to try and carve out a moment or two to watch some of these players get fired up for making a play and bolstering their resume in an attempt to keep their NFL careers alive.
