Lions roster cuts: Detroit waives OL Leo Koloamatangi, Brian Mihalik

The corresponding moves to the Lions’ waiver claims affect the offensive line.

Earlier in the day, reports surfaced that the Detroit Lions were awarded offensive linemen Andrew Donnel and cornerback Dee Virgin on waivers Sunday afternoon. The Lions confirmed those additions later in the day, and announced the subsequent moves, as well.

Both offensive tackle Brian Mihalik and center/guard Leo Koloamatangi have been waived to make space for the two.

Mihalik’s cut doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Donnel, as a swing tackle/guard takes his spot immediately alongside rookie Tyrell Crosby as Detroit’s backup tackles.

Letting Koloamatangi go is a little bigger of a surprise. Having already let go of Wesley Johnson, Koloamatangi was figured to be Detroit’s backup center going forward. If need be, the Lions may slide Frank Ragnow to center, use Joe Dahl—who has limited experience at center— or Kenny Wiggins.

Either way, Mihalik and Koloamatangi may not be gone long. The Lions still have two spaces left on their practice squad, and if both players clear waivers, they are eligible to fill those spots.
