It has been a long time since linebacker Steve Longa found himself on the football field during an NFL game. Almost two calendar years.
Longa lost his entire 2018 season due to a torn ACL, but had previously been a key member of Detroit’s special team units that had been solid during the 2017 season. Since then, Longa has been working his way through injury and finally may seize his opportunity on Sunday.
To make room for Longa, the Lions released safety Marcus Gilchrist. Gilchrist was added to the roster just this week, as a replacement move for Quandre Diggs, who was traded away on Tuesday. The Lions likely wanted to get a closer look at Gilchrist during the week of practice, and obviously, they didn’t see what they needed to see.
With Gilchrist off the roster, the stage is set for rookie Will Harris to come in and take the starting job left in Diggs’ absence.
