Detroit Lions fan confidence skyrockets despite loss to Chiefs

Look around the Detroit Lions fan base, and you’ll see a group of people acting like their team just pulled off one of the biggest wins of the year. Division titles are being discussed, playoff wins suddenly don’t seem like a distant dream, and the Lions general manager is currently sitting with a 95 percent approval rate.

Of course, the reality is the Lions just suffered a narrow loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and now sit at 2-1-1, third place in the NFC North.

But don’t tell Lions fans that. The Kool Aid overfloweth.

Through four weeks of the season, 91 percent of Lions fans are confident in the direction of the franchise. Not only is that the highest percentage we’ve ever recorded in our FanPulse surveys, but it’s currently the third-highest percentage in the entire NFL. The only two teams ahead of Detroit are two of the remaining three undefeated teams: the Chiefs (94%, down four from last week) and the 49ers (99%).

Of course, it’s worth mentioning that the Lions have seen similar midseason spikes before. After their win over the Dolphins in Week 7 of the 2018 season, the Lions were 3-3 and fans were at an 86 percent confidence level. The following week after a loss to the Seahawks, that dropped a full 50 percent to 36.

Lions fans are feeling very good right now, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. Enjoy the good times while there here, but just remember that just as quickly as that optimism comes, it can be sucked away with just one loss.

The Lions don’t play this week, but a Monday night showdown in Green Bay awaits in Week 6, and that will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the outlook for the rest of the season.
