What a strange journey it has been for Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia and it hasn’t even been two full seasons yet. His first season crashed and burned from the start with an immediate contentious relationship with the media and a disaster of a season opener against the Jets. There were moments where Patricia shined in his first year—against the Patriots, Packers and Dolphins come to mind—but the bad easily overshadowed the good in a 6-10 season.
Patricia seems to have learned from many of his rookie mistakes in 2019. He has a much more harmonious relationship with the press, the Lions came out much stronger to start the year, and he may finally have a group of players that are buying into his methods.
There are still plenty of questions about Patricia. Is he too conservative of a game planner? Will his obsession with the run game on both sides of the ball cause him to fall behind in this era of football? But most importantly, can he make the Detroit Lions a contender soon and for the long term?
Those questions remain unanswered, but let’s check the pulse of the average Lions fan to see what their opinion of Patricia is as Lions head coach.
It’s been a while since we checked in, but there were Patricia’s approval numbers during his rookie season.
